Sheffield Photographic Society Summer Outings Programme 2009

To see pictures of previous outings click here.

After the end of the season of talks, competitions and demonstrations we have a series of summer outings which take place on Tuesday evening at places in or near to Sheffield and at weekends for places further afield. Everyone enjoys these extra opportunities for meeting with friends and getting to know each other better and, of course, all the occasions offer photographic opportunities which many would probably not have found if alone. So, this year these are the dates you may like to put in your diaries.

There is no need to book a place for any of the Tuesday events, just turn up on the day, but if you need more information you can phone the organizer. Sometimes you will need to book for the weekend events, which will be shown in the details below. For all these occasions please make your own arrangements for car sharing - the fewer cars the easier the parking. For all the Tuesday evenings the meeting time is 7 pm; for the weekend meetings see the notes below.

If there aren't enough outings listed here, Steve Dorey has produced a list of other events that you can take your camera to this summer; click here to see the list.

This is preliminary information provided by Paul Cutts who has organized the outings, but watch this space for updates. For more information about the weekend outings, contact Paul on 0114 262 0036, and for the Tuesday evenings contact the organizer listed below.

Tuesday 19th May at 7pm: Gardoms Edge near Baslow

Leader Frank Milner, phone 0114 263 0078. Park at Curbar crossroads (turn left at the crossroads and park on the left). This is on the main A621 half way between Owler Bar and Baslow. This is an easy two to three mile walk with scenic and early Bronze Age interests. Back via Birchen Edge.

Saturday 30th May: Southwell Minster and Upton Hall, near Newark

Meet at the Minster cafe in the grounds of the Minster at 10:30 am. The drive from Sheffield is about one hour via Mansfield; it is usually possible to park on the road outside the Minster. Photography permits can be bought at the Minster (£4.80) and we will have until about mid-day to use our cameras inside, afterwards outside. Meet again at the Minster cafe at 12:45 for a snack lunch.

Leave Southwell at about 2:10 pm and drive to Upton Hall, the headquarters of the British Horological Institute. This is about four miles away on the A612 towards Newark. Meet at about 2:30 pm. Upton Hall is an elegant Georgian building and we shall have private access to the exterior for photography purposes. There is no charge but some voluntary contribution is welcome. Leave at about 4 pm and depart for home.

Leader Gerry Sweetman, phone 0114 230 5268. Drive out along the A57 Manchester Road, turn left at Crosspool shops onto Sandygate Road, which becomes Redmires Road as you pass the golf course; continue past the old Lodge Moor hospital on the left, two pubs (The Sportsman and the Three Merry Lads) until the road drops into a dip at the top of Wyming Brook; the car park entrance is immediately after the bridge on the right. Stream and woodland scenery in a picturesque gorge. Tripod useful. Walking distance about two miles or a little more.

Saturday 6th June: The Joe Cornish Gallery at Northallerton (revised instructions)

Meet at the gallery at about 11:30 am (Suggest allow a couple of hours to get there). There is a permanent Joe Cornish exhibition plus a visiting exhibition called Timeless Light of monochrome prints by the Scottish photographer Colin Homes. The gallery is on Zetland Street.

How to get there: Take the A1 north and turn off at Leeming Bar and follow the A684 for Northallerton. On entering Northallerton go past the railway station then straight on at the first roundabout. At the second roundabout go half left into the High Street. After about 100 yards turn right at the Yorkshire Bank and into Zetland Street (one way). The gallery is about 30 yards along on the left. Immediately past the gallery turn left into their car park, which is at the back of the gallery; park on the left hand side. If you get lost, phone the gallery on 01609 777404.

Lunch in Northallerton and then on to Ripon for the afternoon. Timing from there will be up to individuals to decide.
